it’s official, and honestly I really don’t mind, apart from the fact that “Year 5 in RI” makes it sound as if our entire batch was retained or something.

oh well.

/delete all my earlier posts about leaving RI for RJC.

was a fantastic success! =D yes we had some minor (i.e. horribly glaring) screw-ups along the way, and we admittedly weren’t as good as we were during rehearsals, but we still managed to pull it off, and i’m glad as hell that all our hard work has paid off quite handsomely.

i guess what made this production special, was that it was the first time that the whole bunch of us 4K LitRP dudes worked together for a performance, and for our last production as RI boys as well. Truth be told, it was probably one of the roughest project journeys i have ever gone through (you really, really cannot imagine the scale of the problems we faced and the conflicts we got into with each other along the way), but at the end of the day we managed to straighten all of that out, and with a super concerted team-effort (WHICH UNFORTUNATELY DIDN’T REFLECT IN THE RUBRICS DUE TO BAD PLANNING =X), really managed to put up a show that all of us can really be proud of.

truly, there wasn’t a single guy who didn’t contribute meaningfully. kudos goes out to Shou Jian of course, who in every way possible, did a great job in keeping the group together through all the rough patches that we hit along the way.

also, considering I wasn’t exactly proud of how much I had contributed to the previous year’s performance, i’m really glad i got wayy more involved in the entire process this time, especially of my little role as (assistant) scriptwriter of the amazing Leong Hern Wei. =D

at the end of the day, it was a great way to end our last production in RI, and our last major team effort as 4K. of course, congrats to all the other 4K groups as well! I think this production really meant a lot to each and everyone one of us, and we’ve truly managed to prove our worth as Lit students this time.

So what if we look at trees and write poems eh?

(ok honestly i have no idea who among us actually does that, but who cares.)

great expectations.

31 08 2008

term 3’s finally over!

you can’t even imagine how wonderful it is to have survived the toughest term in our last year in RI. Term 3 2008 will without a doubt, go down in history as the toughest 10 weeks we’ve ever had in the school, and although we still have the last stretch to go, we already have half our heads in the mortarboards we’re gonna get at the end of the year. which is great, really.

still, we can’t exactly get the party poppers out yet. Term 4’s looming, and already, we have had to start working on a few big projects, especially the Lit production, which we most fantastically only have 16 days to complete. and what’s best is, i’m the scriptwriter for my group!!! which means I have to rush out my first ever script in a matter of days, which honestly, is just GREATTTT!!!!

nah… complaints aside, the Lit production is still going to be a hell of a joy ride.

hopefully, without emphasis on “hell”.

choices.

22 08 2008

careers forum today actually wasn’t half bad. really made me think through my ambitions/career choices all over again. there is truly alot more to journalism than i always thought there was, and honestly I was very very impressed by what Mr Santokh Singh had to tell us about the job. i mean, even in singapore, with all the control over media and print and all, journalists still have a great amount of freedom of expression, and still exert a widespread influence on the masses, and generally everything else that goes on in the nation.

which is why i think its really one of the most underappreciated jobs out there.

the DJs were fantastic too, with their killer sense of humour and all. couldn’t say so for the lawyer though, who quite honestly was boring, uninformative, and completely unable to answer questions. which kinda weirded me out, considering the nature of his profession. then again maybe he was just too busy to prepare a proper presentation for us or something. who knows. but it was quite a disappointment, considering law is one of my biggest ambitions and all.

I think this is one of the things i love about RI. the school really does every single thing they can to prepare you for your career and life in general. i for one know that i’ve definitely benefitted a hell lot from it.

i am really going to think long and hard about it, and you know what? hopefully i’ll make the right choice with where i wanna take my life.

contemplative.

15 08 2008

im kinda freaked out.

i can’t believe how pro-Mao i sounded in my History test today.

“The benevolent leader….”

“this was how the great leader wanted to bow out of the political scene, and do his last bit for his beloved China”

I think i’m turning Communist. ho shit.

still, studying the cultural revolution is fun as hell. even though I think communism is complete bullshit and all, I think I really found myself appreciating the fact that Mao was truly all about pushing forth his ideology for the sake of China, even if his ideology was pretty much screwed up.

and I guess I don’t really care about how much I get for this test. i’m just damn bloody happy that I managed to write a piece that was really, really insightful for myself. it kinda opened my eyes to the true character of that communist chinaman fella.

ok why am I moving back into the showcase mood…

in other news,

it has hit me recently that there is a scarily staggering amount of hate in this world of ours.

and it sometimes does dawn upon me that hey,

maybe Jonathan Swift was right.

maybe, underneath that irritating, childish, ranty, long-winded, contrived, biased etc. etc.  old man, is some hint of sense after all.

and if that’s true, then what does it mean for us?

i know i’m a loser for not having watched it until now but….

10 08 2008

dark knight was AMAZING!!!! =O

it had been about 5 months since I last watched a movie, so it was a really nice way to get back into the movie-watching mood and all. it really wasn’t the run-of-the-mill superhero movie that I expected (think Spiderman, or Superman returns, or the NATIONAL DAY PARADE), and I think I finally get what jonny meant when he said he thought the movie had ended four times. (although that’s still somewhat silly considering I had only expected it to end on two occasions. lol) the plot twists were just ingenious, and the CHARACTERS!! GOD!!! they shouldn’t even have NOMINATED heath ledger for a posthumous oscar! bloody waste of time – they should’ve just given it to the guy straightaway.

I just love how the Joker makes so much sense with everything he says, such that he really isnt as hateable as he’s supposed to be. on the other hand, Batman isnt exactly all that likeable as well, which makes the protagonist/antagonist relationship complex as hell. yup. that’s the word to describe the movie. complex. complex enough to leave 6 students from supposedly the “best humanities class” in RI in a coffeeshop for about an hour after the movie, just to figure everything out over dinner. which still wasnt all that successful.

i’m definitely looking forward to the next installment. and I pity the crap out of the next actor who has to take ledger’s role.

Joker: Why so serious?

Jarrell Ng: BECAUSE MY SHOWCASE PORTFOLIO IS ON TUESDAY YOU COLOURFUL IDIOT! MOTHER !*@!(*@! TUESDAY!!!!

and i’m sure as hell looking forward to it.

shiny mess.

6 08 2008

after hearing it used to such great impact for Hullett’s drama feste, i really had to search for the full version of Walking in the Air. and i haven’t been able to stop listening to it.

Connie Talbot is just amazing. and the song is just fantastically moving, somehow.

unfortunately, I really cannot say the same about this song:

it’s crystal clear.

whoever writes national day songs, they’re all running clean out of ideas.

(the chinese version is significantly better though. SIGNIFICANTLY)

whoever bill tang is,

i have my doubts.

not about how many emails he’s probably getting though.

and oh my goodness, I have betrayed all my ethics.

i took a GEOG module!!!!

gah.

and here’s my timetable:

(considering you actually CARE)

oh and do drop a comment if u’re taking any of the same modules as me. hahaha.

even if ‘dreams’ is a tad too clichéd.

2 08 2008

after all that talk in the library (with shoij, burg, junyong and sean) about dream cars, dream houses etc. just a few days back, I think we were really brought right back down to earth by Batch CIP over the past two days.

which has been an experience, no doubt.

frankly, the first day kind of sucked. getting rejected by half the families who were supposed to be refurbished, walking to and fro blocks 61 and 62 with the ridiculously heavy cleaning equipment and only ending up doing basic cleaning for one tiny flat whose residents we couldn’t even interact with ticked me off quite abit, to be honest.

which is why I was damn glad that today was a far cry off the first day. in a good sense.

painting is really really fun! short of getting paint on ourselves, I think theo, sean, junyong, shoij, zhixuan and I did a fantastic job. And we were much better off than Zaki and his other 4Kers anyway, splattered with white paint from head to toe and all. Lol.

All in all, we managed to overcome all difficulties, working hand-in-hand, shoulder to shoulder to help brighten up the life on a person in need; we braved through every single obstacle, and one can imagine how touched we were when we saw that beaming smile on the beneficiary’s face, knowing that we, had through our efforts brightened up her life, if only for a moment.

*gets rid of vomit-inducing, overly clichéd, blatantly politically correct and undeniably spastic tone*

jokes aside, i truly did enjoy the experience – both in terms of helping the needy and actually painting a full one-room flat with fellow 4Kers.

more importantly, walking among the less fortunate and witnessing how disadvantaged they truly were, made me realise that I really should learn to cherish all that I have in life now.

Alot, alot more.

P.S. How many RI boys does it take to screw up a HDB void deck with paint?

One.

How many RI boys does it take to panic over the whole mess, try to clean it up in a whole host of different ways, make the mess even worse than before, but do their best to correct it again, eventually doing so, and in the whole process having a huge laugh at how idiotic RI boys can be at times?

You tell me.
